July 4 holiday information, fireworks rules and safety tips

Post Date:06/28/2017 11:06 AM

City Hall and most City offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday. Garbage collection will be delayed one day for the rest of the week following the July 4 holiday, with Friday’s collection occurring on Saturday.

Please remember that the use of consumer fireworks in the City of West Des Moines is allowed only on July 4 between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Pursuant to Iowa Code section 364.2(6) (2017), it “shall be a simple misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not less than six hundred and twenty five dollars for any person to use or explode consumer fireworks as defined in Iowa Code section 727.2 within the corporate limits of the City on any day other than July 4 between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.”

Residents are asked to follow these important safety tips:

  • Roman candles, bottle rockets or other fireworks that leave the ground should never be aimed at people, vehicles or buildings.
  • Fireworks can only be used on your property. They cannot land on your neighbor’s property.
  • Keep fireworks away from brush, leaves and other flammable items.
  • Never allow children to ignite or play with fireworks.
  • Keep pets safe in an interior room of your residence to lessen the impact of the noise caused by fireworks.
  • Always have a garden hose, bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to use the extinguisher.
  • Stand several feet away from lit fireworks.
  • If a device fails to ignite, do not stand over it to investigate. Put it out with water and dispose of it.
  • Do not handle fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • If you want to see fireworks, attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to professionals.

The Independence Day parade will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 3. The route begins at the corner of Valley West Drive (35th Street) and Ashworth Road, proceeds east on Ashworth, turns south on Vine Street and follows Vine to 4th Street where it turns south and ends on Maple Street.

The West Des Moines Fireworks Display will be held at dusk on Tuesday, July 4, over Blue Heron Lake in Raccoon River Park, 2500 Grand Avenue.

Fireworks attendees should allow for extra travel time since the fireworks display attracts over 10,000 people each year and the area will be congested. Attendees also are advised to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations and use insect repellents with DEET as directed. Long-sleeved shirts and pants also help prevent bugs from biting.

To assist with mosquito control, the West Des Moines Public Services Department will be ground spraying (fogging) for mosquitoes, flies and gnats in various areas of the City, weather permitting, during the evening hours of Saturday, July 1, through Monday, July 3. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Public Services Department at 222-3480.
