West Des Moines Police File Charges Stemming from Threats of Explosives

West Des Moines Police Case # 17-03239 On July 11, 2017 at around 8 p.m. a male contacted WestCom Dispatch stating that he had barricaded himself in the Valley West mall. The subject disconnected frequently with dispatch. Throughout a series of calls back and forth, dispatch relayed information about this male stating he had explosives inside the mall and that he himself was armed. The male then stated he was at a Walgreens. We worked with dispatch to have this males cellular phone tracked in order to assist locating him. The phone information showed this male to be in the area of 22nd and Westown Pkwy. Several officers responded to this area and ultimately located the male in a construction dumpster behind the Walgreens 1660 22nd Street. Officers from Urbandale, Clive, Iowa State Patrol, Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Windsor Heights, Waukee, State Fire Marshall assisted our department with the incident.
The male has been identified as:
Ouinten Duran Nelson of Des Moines, Iowa D.O.B. 09-09-1980. After an evaluation at Broadlawns Medical Center, he was charged with the following and taken to the Polk County Jail-
- One count of Threat of Explosive or Incendiary Device
- One count of a Threat of Terrorism
- One count of Harassment 1st Degree
- One count of Interference with Official Acts
- One count of False Report of Explosive or Incendiary Device
