CITY OF WEST DES MOINES

On March 6, 2018 voters of West Des Moines residing in Polk County are able to vote on a one-cent Local Option Sales and Service Tax (LOSST). If approved, the sales tax in Polk County will increase from 6 to 7 cents. Polk County would join 97 of Iowa's 99 counties, including Dallas County, that already have LOSST.

How will the funds be used?

50% of revenue will be applied directly to city property tax reduction for all property taxpayers in West Des Moines.

50% of revenue will be applied directly to:
- Construction of public parks, sports and recreational facilities and trails
- Public infrastructure construction
- Public safety
- Public library uses

What does it mean to me?

With the funds from LOSST, the City plans to:

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF   PARKS AND RECREATION    PUBLIC LIBRARY   WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT 
Provide tax reduction to property owners in West Des Moines   

-Offer new ways to explore and discover the outdoors with the Five Waters Project
-Preserve land and protect wildlife 

  -Make improvements to the City library facility
-Create additional outreach initiatives in the community 
  Assist businesses in the recruitment and retention of employees of all ages with quality of life improvements
   

If LOSST passes, how will it likely affect my property taxes?

The current property tax rate in West Des Moines is $12.00 per $1,000 of taxable valuation. If the measure passes, the reduced property tax rate for all property owners in West Des Moines would be $11.05 per $1,000 of taxable valuation.
